The Chihshang Fault is a reverse and left-lateral fault. The 1951 Taitung earthquake and the 2003 Success earthquake both caused surface rupture along some parts of the fault. Studies on past earthquakes of the Chihshang Fault have shown that multiple seismic events have caused displacement of sediment layers. Based on current survey data, most surface ruptures occur along the same or nearby existing fault lines, forming very distinct terrain features. The seismically active geological sensitive area of the Chihshang Fault is located in the eastern part of Taiwan, starting in Chuli, Yuli Township, Hualien County, and extending to Ruilong Village, Luye Township, Taitung County. The main fault line is approximately 67 kilometers long, covering an area of about 21 square kilometers, passing through the basins of major rivers such as Siouguluan River and Beinan River in the Hualien-Taitung Valley Plain from north to south. The distribution of the geologically sensitive area of the Chihshang Fault is located in Yuli Township and Fuli Township in Hualien County, as well as Chishang Township, Guanshan Township, and Luye Township in Taitung County, covering a total of 5 administrative districts.
