On the afternoon of June 4, 2016, a Puyuma Express train derailed between Fuli and Dongzhu Stations on the Taiwan Railway, which prompted an investigation due to the complexity and rarity of the accident. Following a second derailment on June 22 between Fuyuan and Guangfu Stations, both incidents in the Hualien and Taitung regions led to a decision to conduct a joint special investigation to determine the cause and propose improvement measures.
