Taiwan Sugar Corporation started with sugar production. Before, its own farmland was used to grow sugarcane. With the changes in sugar production, the closure of sugar mills, and the opening of imported sugar, farmland shifted from producing raw materials for sugar production and temporary leasing for sugarcane to sustainable use of non-sugarcane farmland. Due to the decline of the sugar industry and the need to privatize state-owned enterprises, since diversifying its operations, the distribution of organic agricultural manpower and land resources is as follows: 1) Organic rice: Since 2003, organic rice production has been underway in various locations, including Chunghua and Changhua County, Pingtung, Taitung, and Hualien. The rice varieties mainly recommended by the Council of Agriculture include Tainan 11, Taitung 30, and Taitung Kinsend 2, and at the end of 2017, the total certified area was 103.08 hectares, with an annual yield of approximately 800 metric tons. 2) Organic fruits and vegetables: Since 2002, organic vegetable production has been established in Kaohsiung, Tainan, Yunlin, and Kaohsiung, and the newly established organic fruit and vegetable production region in Tainan began operations on January 2, 2014. The production includes organic leafy vegetables, root vegetables, cucurbits, and fruits, and at the end of 2017, the total certified area was 67.75 hectares, with an annual sales volume of approximately 620 metric tons.
