Coral reef ecosystems host over 25% of marine species, including important mollusk species such as giant clams, tritons, top shells, and trochus. Due to long-term fishing pressure, wild populations have decreased significantly. Giant clams not only serve as indicators of coral reef health, but are also protected under Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Previous surveys in Taiwan have often failed to document individual species, leading to uncertainty about their current status. Therefore, this project aims to assess the status of giant clams and other important gastropods living in Taiwan's coral reef ecosystems.
